Solvent Suppression Methods
Elimination of solvent /water peak necessary for several reasons:
- limited dynamic range of ADC digitizer (analog-digital converter)
- 8 bit word length 255:1 range
- 16 bit word length 65535:1 range
- lowering gain: leads to limited ADC-resolution on signals of interest: rounding errors => digital noise =>lower signal to noise
- even if digitization gain appropriate for single scan, signal averaging might still exceed computer storage capacity:
- 256 scans of intense 8 bit fill up 16 bit memory completely!
Goal with supression: dynamic range of 100
=> supression of solvent signal by factor of 1000 needs to be achieved
Methods: two general groups:
a) reduction of water signal intensity by excitation/saturation
b) non-excitation of the solvent
